Sam Raimi is in talks to direct Love May Fail, a novel by Silver Linings Playbook author Matthew Quick that Mike White has adapted. Matt Tolmach is producing. Elizabeth Cantillon is the exec producer.
The project veers from Raimi’s blockbuster path that led him to most recently direct Oz The Great And Powerful and three Spider-Man films. It reunites the director with Sony and Tolmach, who oversaw those Spider-Man films when he headed production at Sony with Doug Belgrad. Tolmach now produces the Amazing Spider-Man films with Avi Arad. In Quick’s novel, a woman who is coming off a demoralizing ending to her marriage to a cheating husband returns to her hometown determined to clear the name of her favorite English teacher, whose career was ended forcibly after a classroom scandal.
The book will be published in June by HarperCollins. Quick’s books have been catnip to Hollywood since the success of Silver Linings Playbook. His latest, the YA novel Every Exquisite Thing, was sold to The Weinstein Company last week by Rich Green. His books Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock and The Good Luck Of Right Now have adaptations percolating. Raimi is repped by CAA.
